1. Turn Down the Heat
Your tresses have been suffering the summer heat all season long. Give them a break by using a cooler hair dryer setting for a bit while your hair recuperates.

2. Stash the Irons
Try out some of the new fall styles that don’t require a flat or curling iron. Your hair will thank you, and you might find a look you like even better than your current style.

3. Get a Trim
After all the sun, wind, and chlorine it’s a wonder you have any nutrients left in your hair – and the result is split-ends and frizz. Getting a little trim is an easy way to start fresh for the fall.

4. Avoid Alcohol
…in your hair products that is. If you’re hair is already feeling dry and dehydrated, using styling products that have alcohol in them, like gel, will make your hair even more brittle.

5. Get a Good Brush

Fall is here! Well, it’s almost here weather-wise, and it is definitely here fashion-wise! As the weather starts to cool and the leaves begin to change color, it’s time to add some color to our wardrobes too! It’s the perfect time of year to add some fun pops of rich color to your clothing to make bold statements or add chic accents. This can be something as small as a statement necklace or a richly colored bag, to something all over like a deep red or purple dress.

I’m starting out my fall wardrobe with a subtle blend of color in the Tracy Dress from Monroe and Main. The elegant pattern features a deep purple color that stands out on the muted gray fabric.

Can I say how much I love this dress! First of all I’m thrilled with the fit. It is nice and curve-hugging, but definitely not too va-va-voom. And it is extremely comfortable! We’re talking p.j. worth comfort. I could sleep in this thing!

One of my favorite parts of the dress is the side gathers. It adds such a note of interest and adds to the flattering shape as well.

The other big positive of the Tracy dress by Monroe and Main is that it is versatile enough to go from dressy to casual. I went from the more dressy, business-meeting-worthy look above, to a more casual out for the day look below.

How to Make the Perfect Top Knot

There are a few classic hairstyles we can go to when we need a great look in a hurry and the Top Knot is near the top of that list. It is the ideal style for any occasion since it can easily be paired with a dressed up or casual ensemble for the perfect look. Jenny Balding, NYC Cutler/Redken Stylist, shares how to achieve this fabulous look:

For best results, start with day two hair onwards as your hair will be easier to manage with an already ‘lived -in’ texture.
Mist hair with dry shampoo, focusing primarily on the roots mainly – this will give your hair more texture, grip and volume.
Then mist a light hairspray throughout for some hold and grip.
Sweep your hair into high ponytail. Keep checking what it looks like from your profile so you position ponytail in the most flattering point of your head for your face shape.
Take the ponytail and back-brush from the underneath lightly – this creates a slight disheveled texture.
Sweep around the base of the ponytail and pin using U shaped hairpins. These really anchor the hair best which means you will only need 2 or 3 to secure.
This creates perfectly disheveled topknot that looks ultra stylish and works for any event.

Makeovers for Deserving Teachers from Foxcroft + a Reader Giveaway

Teachers do so much every day and for the most part receive little recognition and comparatively low pay for what they do. Luckily, there are some people and some outstanding companies who celebrate teachers and help put them in the spotlight.

Foxcroft, the leader in non-iron shirts and classic lifestyle apparel for women, recently recognized the deserving public school teachers of New York City with head-to-toe makeovers in partnership with L’Appartement Prive Salon in Manhattan. Twenty women from P.S. 31 in Brooklyn were transformed into Foxcroft Style Stars this summer.

This is the second year in a row that Foxcroft has produced their Style Stars project. Partnering with P.S. 31 Brooklyn, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, is the brand’s special way to recognize all teachers for their hard work and devotion to their communities.

L’Appartement Prive Salon, located off the prestigious Fifth Avenue at 57th Street, hosted the ladies for the day where they were treated to hair consultations and styling by celebrity hairstylist, Laurent Dufourg, in additional to a custom wardrobe from Foxcroft.

Janet Zukowski, who has been a teacher at P.S. 31 for over 30 years, said the day was “magical.” She added, “We felt appreciated and were treated royally. I think it was a once in a lifetime kind of event.”

Dufourg, who began his career in Paris at the age of 16, has worked with celebrities including, Gwyneth Paltrow, Johnny Depp, Sophia Loren and Tina Fey. “Working with these ladies is extremely rewarding because they leave the salon feeling like a million dollars. I love it. It is very satisfying,” Dufourg said.

“It was nice to be pampered and recognized for the work that we do in a totally different way,” LouAnn Gallo, who has taught at P.S. 31 for 15 years, said. “It was a really positive experience.”

“We are thrilled to have the women of P.S. 31 Brooklyn participate in our Style Stars project,” says Tom Dietrich, President of The Apparel Group, the parent company of Foxcroft. “This project reflects our ongoing effort to support teachers for their hard work in educating our children.”
